Frequently Asked Questions
Reiki is a practice that has touched the lives of a multitude of people around the world, yet there are still many misconceptions that prevent some people from experiencing its benefits. By addressing these misconceptions and answering other frequently asked questions, we will help shed light on what Reiki really is - and what it is not.
Is Reiki assocated with a Religion?
Reiki is NOT a religious belief. Anyone from any belief system (or no belief system) can practice and receive Reiki. Reiki is love and light.
Is Reiki a Massage?
Reiki is NOT a massage or reflexology. Reiki can be hands on, hands above, or distant, but it does not involve manual massage.
Is Reiki Just a Placebo Effect?
Reiki is NOT just a placebo effect. Some think Reiki works only through belief, but placebo-controlled trials report real benefits like stress relief, relaxation, pain reduction, improved cell growth, and stengthened immune response.
Does Reiki Require Pychic Abilities?
Reiki does NOT require special powers. There’s a misconception that all Reiki practitioners have mediumistic abilities or psychic gifts. In reality, Reiki requires intuitive skills and a lot of practice to cultivate the inner stillness to feel and direct energy.
Does Reiki Cure Diseases?
Reiki is NOT meant to directly “cure” illnesses. Reiki promotes balance and supports the body’s own healing, but the results can vary. (Although miracles have been reported to happen!)
Does Reiki Replace Standard Medicine?
Reiki is NOT a substitute for standard medical treatment. Reiki is a complementary medicine. It is meant to be a support but not a replacement for physical or mental health conditions.
Does Reiki Have Any Harmful Side Effects?
Reiki is NOT harmful. Reiki is gentle and there are no contraindications or negative side effects. It does not hurt or rob energy from the receiver or the practitioner. However, Reiki should not be performed over electrical implants as it may cause a malfunction.
What Should I Wear During a Session?
Clients should wear loose fitting clothes (preferable not jeans). The client typical lies on a Reiki table and will remove their shoes. They will remain fully clothed for the entire session.
What will the Experience Feel Like?
What one experiences during a Reiki treatment varies somewhat from person to person. However, feelings of deep relaxation are usually felt by all. Some feel tingling, buzzing, or warmth. Others drift off to sleep, report floating outside their bodies, have visions, see colors, or have emotional releases.
